year. They're the ones who need a little extra help to come into the world, whose mothers bully them, who haven't quite figured out how the milk bar works. Sometimes, all of the above. This guy ticks two out of three boxes. Some critics of #livestock #farming might say this calf is just a number to me, that I only helped him because his survival affects my bottom line. But in the stressful, intense moments I spend with these calves, it's not about that all. I don't think of money, I'm simply focused on getting that #calf delivered safely, keeping its mum comfortable, getting them fed, showing them how to find the udder. The actions are driven not just by welfare, but compassion. Whether that animal needs me at 2pm or 2am, I'm there making sure they have what they need. For a few days after one of these special calves is born, we're #besties. They follow me round the field, try to suck my hands / coat, let me cuddle them. And then, something clicks. They realise Mum has the good stuff. That I'm not that great at mooing. That's it after that. They join the main herd and, a day or two later, they've forgotten that we were once good friends. Over the next few months, they return to being "proper" #cows. Which is to say that they're only interested in me insofar as I'm the biped that brings hay or moves them onto new grass. Like many #farmers, I do all in my power to give our stock the best life possible. We are grateful to each and every one for what they do in their life as well in their death. Without them to graze our farm, we wouldn't be able to provide a habitat for the rare flora and fauna that populate Salisbury Plain. We wouldn't be able to fertilise our crops or protect historical sites from overgrowth. We are always sad when they make their final journey, but it would have been sadder still for them to not have existed at all.
